Frequently asked questions
Is ImageForge really fully on-device?
Yes. All compression and conversion runs locally with a built-in engine. Your images, their contents and metadata never leave your Mac, and the app keeps working with no network connection.
Do I need an account?
No. There's no sign-up and no login. You download the app and start dropping images. The only time you give us an email is if you choose to write to support.
How does Pro work, and is it a subscription?
Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. It's processed by Apple through the App Store, and Restore Purchase re-activates it on your devices without any account.
What are the system requirements?
ImageForge runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs (Universal). A Windows build is available now on the Microsoft Store, and a Linux build is on the roadmap.
Will compressing damage my images?
By default ImageForge is lossless — quality is never degraded unless you explicitly opt into a lossy mode. You also control whether originals are overwritten or kept as copies.
Where do my compressed files go?
Whatever you choose. In Preferences → General (or the toolbar before a batch) you pick: overwrite the originals in place, keep a compressed copy with a -min suffix, or send everything to a separate output folder. ImageForge never deletes an original without your consent.
Which formats can it convert between?
Open Convert (⌘K) and choose a target: PNG, JPEG and WebP are free; AVIF, HEIC and JPEG XL are Pro. The panel shows the new {name}.ext name and tells you when the conversion stays lossless versus when it has to be lossy.
How do I strip EXIF and GPS data?
It's on by default. In Preferences → Metadata, “Strip metadata by default” removes EXIF, GPS and editing history. You can still choose to always preserve copyright, the ICC color profile and orientation.
